The Real ART of Running

Run Streak: 113 Days and Counting

On May 1st I joined an online group to “streak” the month of May. I committed to run at least one mile every day that month. Once May ended I decided to keep streaking. Then June went by, then July and now as we near the end of August I have run 113 days in a row. No off days. No rest days.

On one hand 113 days seems like a lot. It’s over three months. It’s nearly a third of a year. But on the other hand, 113 days isn’t really that long. It just depends what you’re doing. Running everyday hasn’t felt like a burden. There have only been a few days where it was a bit challenging to fit it in. It certainly helps that I’ve always been a morning runner. And the quarantine has actually helped since I don’t have to commute to work.

My weekly routine has been fairly consistent. One day of speed work, one long run day and a mix of easy to moderate days. My “rest days” have been 1-2 mile easy days. The 522 miles for 113 days is an average of just over 4.6 miles per day. I dialed back a little in June due to an Achilles tendon issue that is still bothering me but is manageable.

With summer and fall races cancelled due to COVID 19, I plan to maintain my schedule with hopes that I’ll have the opportunity to race again in 2020. If not, I’ll have a good base for Spring 2021 races. As far as the streak, I don’t have a goal. I guess I’ll run until I’m tired of it. Like Forrest Gump.
