The Real ART of Running

Shorts and T-shirt. Now that’s more like it.

I think I can finally stop lying to myself about how great it is to run in the cold weather of winter and early spring.  Yes, I do it but now I can admit that I don’t like it since the warm weather is here.  I tolerate it.  I tell myself it builds character. I make myself get excited about new winter running gear so I’ll get outside in the snow.  But let’s face it, the best running is shorts and t-shirt weather running.  And it was here in Detroit today.  56 degrees when I headed out just before 9:00am for a 12 mile run.  It actually felt quite liberating without long sleeves and running pants.  I coasted along for the first 6 miles not even aware of the weather.  But then when I turned a corner to head back toward home I found myself running straight into the wind.  I hadn’t even noticed a wind until then but now I had to fight it all the way back.  It actually seemed to get stronger the closer I got to home.  If fact it turned into a “put-your-head-down-and-pound-it-out” wind.  But even so, it was still a warm wind in shorts and t-shirt weather.  So in other words, a great run.
