The Real ART of Running

Good News, Bad News.

Which do you want first?

The Good News is that I placed first in my age group Saturday in the “Run For the Health Of It” 5k at Red Oaks Nature Center in Madison Heights. The bad news is that my time was nearly two minutes slower than my goal.

There are a few reasons my time was slower than I hoped.

1. It was cold and crazy windy and it seemed like we were always running into the wind.

2. I was probably ambitious with my goal since this was the first race of the year.

3. I really haven’t done much speedwork training yet this Spring.

So, considering all those “reasons” (excuses?) I shouldn’t be too disappointed. Perhaps the other runners in my 65-69 age group had the same reasons so my first place medal was well earned.

Also, finishing 11th out of a total of 94 runners tells me one of two things. Either I was in better shape than the other racers this early in the year. Or this smallish race doesn’t attract real racers and it’s more of a “fun run” event. The truth may be a little of both.
