The Real ART of Running

Early Morning Rain

Most runners probably prefer to run when it’s not raining.  I’m no different.  But there are days when a light rain is welcome.  This morning was one of those days.  At 6:15AM when I looked outside at the weather to decide what to wear on my run I noticed the pavement was spotted with raindrops.  Apparently it had just started raining moments before.  I checked the thermometer and it showed a temp of 45 outside.  Definitely the warmest morning of this spring season so far.  For a split second I thought about jumping on the treadmill instead of heading out into the rain.  But I couldn’t pass up a 45 degree morning.  So I threw on my running jacket and a baseball cap and headed out.  It only took about a quarter-mile for me to realize I had made the right choice.  A light, early morning rain in warm weather helps keep you focused and makes you feel alive.  It can also give you a sense of pride for being out there when others would use the rain as an excuse to skip that run or stay on the treadmill. So the next time you think about skipping a run because of a little rain, don’t.  Get out there an use it as motivation.
